The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced tax relief for individuals and businesses across Louisiana impacted by the severe winter ice storms that began on January 22, 2026. In response to the state’s disaster declaration, affected taxpayers now have until March 31, 2026, to file certain federal tax returns and make qualifying tax payment.
Who Qualifies?
Relief is available to individuals and households who reside in Louisiana, as well as businesses operating within the state. The disaster declaration allows the IRS to postpone specific filing and payment deadlines for taxpayers located in the designated disaster area.
What Deadlines Are Extended?
For certain deadlines that fell on or after January 22, 2026, and on or before March 31, 2026, eligible taxpayers are granted additional time to file returns and submit payments.
This includes:
Individual income tax returns and payments originally due during this timeframe
Quarterly payroll and certain excise tax returns normally due on February 2, 2026
What If You Receive a Penalty Notice?
If you receive a late filing or late payment penalty notice for a due date that falls within the postponement period, contact the IRS using the phone number listed on the notice to request penalty abatement.
